Manna Sandwiches

I stole this recipe for Manna Sandwiches from plainchicken.com who stole it from Hoody’s Hoagies in Claxton, GA. These delicious sandwiches are like considered a loose meat sandwich. Ground beef is cooked in a skillet, then onion, water, soy sauce, parsley, basil and garlic powder are added. Next a sauce made with mayonnaise, French dressing, ketchup and brown mustard. The sauce is spread on hoagie rolls, topped with sliced Swiss cheese and broiled until the cheese melts. Then the beef is added and the sandwiches are ready to eat. Be careful, others will want to try these sandwiches also.

Make the sauce first by combining ½ cup mayonnaise (regular or low-fat), ¼ cup Catalina or French dressing, 2 ½ tbsp ketchup, 2 tbsp spicy brown mustard and 2 tbsp sugar in a bowl. (Regular brown mustard can be used instead of spicy.)

Whisk well and set aside. (The sauce can be made in advance, covered and refrigerated until ready to serve. The sauce will keep for up to a week in the refrigerator.)

Then in a large skillet, cook 2 ½ lbs ground beef until no longer pink. Drain the fat. Add 2 tbsp dried minced onion, 2 tbsp water, ¼ cup soy sauce, 1 tbsp dried parsley, 1 ½ tsp dried basil and ½ tsp garlic powder.

Stir well to combine. Simmer for 10 minutes, or until all the liquid is evaporated.

Then split 6 hoagie rolls in half. Slather them with sauce, and put Swiss cheese slices on top. Place them under the broiler until the cheese melts, about 1-2 minutes. Divide ground beef between the buns.

Next close the sandwiches and enjoy!
