Honey Garlic Baked Pork Bites

I stole this recipe for Honey Garlic Baked Pork Bites from lordbyronskitchen.com. This delicious entrée has very little prep. Pork shoulder is cut into small chunks and tossed with salt, pepper, sliced onions and olive oil. Then the pork mixture is placed in a casserole dish and baked for 1 hour. A honey, garlic and red chili flake mixture is stirred into the pork mixture. This dish cooks for 2 more hours and is stirred every 30 minutes before sesame seeds are mixed in. The long cooking time and seasoning makes the pork shoulder tender and delicious.

Did you know? Pork shoulder is also called picnic ham, which isn’t a true ham since it comes from the shoulder instead of the leg. When this cut is smoked is has a very ham-like flavor. It is a slightly tougher cut of pork so it requires longer cooking.¹ (see more trivia in the Trivia tab)

Preheat oven to 350 F. Slice 1 large onion into ½ inch thick slices and place in a 9×13 casserole dish.

Next, trim 4 lbs pork shoulder, fat cap removed, cut into 1.5-2 inch pieces. Mix with 1 tbsp olive oil, ½ tsp salt and ¼ tsp black pepper. Mix the pork with the onions in the pan.

Cover the dish with foil and bake 1 hour.

Stir together 1 cup honey, ½ tsp dried red chili flakes and 8 cloves minced garlic.

Then add the honey and garlic mixture to the pan. Stir into the pork bites. (There will be a lot of water – do not drain!) Bake for 30 minutes, uncovered.

Remove from oven, stir and bake 30 minutes more. Then repeat for 30 minutes more (at 2 ½ hour mark). Then add 1 tsp sesame seeds.

Finally, stir in sesame seeds and return to oven for 30 minutes more (3 hour mark). Remove from oven, cool for 5 minutes. Then sprinkle with parsley and additional sesame seeds.

Serve warm and enjoy the deliciousness!
