General Tso’s Shrimp

I stole this recipe for General Tso’s Shrimp from domesticsuperhero.com. The secret to this delicious recipe is the yummy cooking sauce. First water, red pepper flakes, brown sugar, hoisin, rice vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce and cornstarch are whisked together. Then garlic and ginger are cooked in a skillet. Next shrimp is added to the skillet and cooked for a few minutes. The sauce is poured over the shrimp and cooked until the sauce thickens. Sesame seeds and green onions are sprinkled on top of the shrimp when serving. This recipe is another delicious way to make Chinese food at home, minus the fortune cookies.

The ingredients for this recipe are: ½ cup water, ¼ tsp red pepper flakes, ¼ cup brown sugar, 3 tbsp Hoisin sauce, 3 tbsp rice vinegar, 3 tbsp ketchup, 2 tbsp low sodium soy sauce, 1 tbsp cornstarch, 1 tbsp sesame oil, 1 inch knob fresh ginger, 1 tbsp garlic and 2 lbs large shrimp

Chop 2 stalks of green onions and then set aside.

Then in a large skillet over medium heat, add sesame oil and heat for 30 seconds. Add the peeled and deveined shrimp and cook for 2 minutes.

Next in a small bowl add water, red pepper flakes, brown sugar, hoisin, rice vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce and cornstarch. Whisk to combine. Pour over the shrimp.

Allow sauce to come to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook 2 to 3 minutes more until the sauce is thickened and shrimp are cooked through. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.

Ingredients

  2. Then in a large skillet over medium heat, add sesame oil and heat for 30 seconds. Add the garlic and ginger and sauté for 1 minute stirring constantly. Next add the shrimp and cook for 2 minutes.
  3. Whisk the sauce again, then pour into the skillet. Turn the heat to high, and stir through the shrimp. Allow sauce to come to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer. Cook 2 to 3 minutes more until the sauce is thickened and shrimp are cooked through.
  4. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions. Serve immediately.
