Herbed Bread Twists

These tasty bread twists get help from frozen bread dough. Frozen dough is thawed and rolled into a square and brushed with a butter herb mixture and sprinkled with mozzarella cheese. The dough square is folded in thirds and cut into strips. Each strip is twisted and placed on a baking sheet. After proofing the bread twists are brushed with an egg wash and sprinkled with sesame seeds. This recipe goes great with a soup or is great for a holiday meal.

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup butter softened
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp basil
  • ¼ tsp marjoram
  • ¼ tsp oregano
  • 1 loaf (1 lb) frozen bread dough thawed
  • ¾ cup shredded part skim mozzarella cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 4 tsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine butter and seasoning. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough into 12 inch square. Spread with butter mixture to within ½ inch of edges; sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
  2. Fold dough into thirds. Cut widthwise into 24 strips. Twist each strip twice; pinch ends to seal. Place twists 2 inch apart on greased baking sheets. Cover and let rise in warm place until doubled, about 40 minutes.
  3. Beat egg and water; brush over dough. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake at 375 F until light and golden brown, 10 to12 minutes.
  4. Remove from pans to wire racks.
