Faster Than Take-out Orange Chicken

This easy recipe starts with frozen breaded chicken chunks. The chicken is cooked according to the package in an air fryer or baked in an oven. Then orange juice, garlic, mirin, soy sauce, chili powder, brown sugar and orange zest are mixed together in a bowl. Next the orange sauce is cooked in skillet until thickened. The cooked chicken is added to the skillet and tossed until coated. Green onions and sesame seeds are sprinkled on top when serving.

Ingredients

  • 12 to 16 oz breaded chicken chunks 340 to 454 gr
  • 1 ½ cups orange juice
  • 4 to 6 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp garlic paste
  • ¼ cup mirin
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ¼ tsp chili powder or red pepper flakes
  • ¼ cup light or dark brown sugar
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3 tbsp water
  • Steamed broccoli
  • Sesame seeds, green onions and sesame oil for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the chicken in an air fryer at 400 F for 10 minutes or bake according to package directions until crispy and crunchy.
  2. In a small bowl combine orange juice, garlic, garlic paste, mirin, soy sauce, chili powder, brown sugar and orange zest.
  3. In a small cup combine the cornstarch and water, until milky.
  4. In a large skillet combine orange sauce and cornstarch slurry. Cook over medium heat, whisking continuously until sauce is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Add the chicken to the skillet, stir to ensure all the chicken is coated in the sauce.
  6. Add steamed broccoli to the skillet. Toss until everything is coated.
  7. Remove from heat. Drizzle with sesame oil. Sprinkle green onions and sesame seeds on top.
  8. Serve over rice.
